About The Author

Nicholas B. Dirks, PhD is President and CEO of The New York Academy of Sciences, one of the oldest and most esteemed scientific organizations in the United States. He is a Professor of History and Anthropology at University of California, Berkeley and an award-winning author of eight books, including the book City of Intellect: The Uses and Abuses of the University. He is also the former Chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley and Executive VP and Dean of the Faculty for Arts and Sciences at Columbia University. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a senior member of the Council on Foreign Relations. In addition, he has been a MacArthur fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and has also held a Guggenheim fellowship.
